It started with a runny nose back in Sept. He had a runny nose (clear) for one week turns out he had a lower respiratory infection. He was put on antibiotics, which he finished. About five days after finishing the antibiotics the runny nose came back with a bad cough. The doctor said his chest sounded fine that is was probably a virus. Meanwhile I kept his mattress tilted, he is using a humidifier, saline drops, suction bulb…nothing helps. The congestion kept getting worse. I brought him to the doctors a few times over the next month, but they kept telling me its a virus even when his nose started to run green and red. One weekend he slept almost the whole weekend, the Dr was alarmed so I took him to the hospital for a chest x-ray which came back perfectly normal. The Dr. put him on a nebulizer. Then he started having trouble with balance 3 days later. Turns out he had an ear infection. The Dr put him on z-pac to make sure there was no infection any where else. The runny nose and congested was still a problem even on and after the antibiotics. After he finished the z-pac he had an allergy test. He is not allergic to anything. They did a nose culture after the allergy test. The nose culture also came back negative. Three days after the nose culture he got a high fever. They did a flu test, came back negative. The Dr. said it some sort of virus just let it run its course and put him on the nebulizer if his cough gets bad. The fever broke the next day and he looked a little better but then the next day he woke up with a high fever again. I took him to the doctors and he has another ear infection, this was on last Wed, today is Monday. He has been on antibiotics for 5 days and his nebulizer for 5 days and there is no difference. The Dr. just says they don’t why he is this way. Up until three months ago he has never been sick. He is so miserable. He will be playing and then he will just stop and start crying. He wanders around the house crying. Sometimes he wants me to hold and then there are times he screams louder if I try to console him. I can’t stand to see him feeling this way anymore. Please help me get my baby feeling better.
It sure sounds like allergies to me.
Did you get him tested by an allergist? If not, I really would look into that.
meanwhile, talk with your doctor about ear tubes. My son had chronic ear infections until the ear tubes at 18 months. 13 years later, still hasn’t had another. He always had a runny nose too, before the tubes, but not green and not the kind of congestion you describe.
Poor little guy. I know how whiny I am when I have a runny nose – he is much braver than I am.
have them test his blood – red blood cell and white blood cell count.
It could either be allergies or a sinus infection. I would take him to an ears, nose and throat Doctor who specializes in only that.
1. Find a new doctor.
2. Have him evaluated for ear tubes.
3. Take him to an allergist.
I hope your little guy starts to feel better soon, and I hope you also get some relief from the incredible stress you are feeling having to see him so uncomfortable. It seems absolutely inhumane for your current pediatrician to keep on this path without looking deeper for a root cause.
Also, while he is on the antibiotics – give him some probiotics so that his digestive tract isn’t a new source of pain. A pharmacist can help to recommend drops to add to his food, or you can just give him yogurt as a milder source.
Have you tried removing ‘high risk’ foods from his diet? My daughter had uncontrollable asthma and ear infections. We were at the Dr every two weeks till I was complaining to my mom’s Chiropractor one day and he asked of she was allergic to anything. I said no all her tests had been negative and he gave me a list of high risk foods especially in toddlers. My sister is allergic to milk so I started there, anything that contained lactose(milk sugar) or caseins(milk proteins) was removed from her diet the house actually. Within a month her asthma was under control and there were no more ear infections. She still tests negative for allergies but give her two ounces of something with milk in it and within 12 hours she will have an ear infection.
Now that I have a son I didn’t give him milk till he was 2 and he vomited immediately. He had a diaper rash that went on for 4 months and the Dr couldn’t explain so I went back to my food list and Removed soy, I don’t know why it just seamed a good starting point we were after all drinking soy milk. In a week his butt was healed. The allergy tests for him are negative as well.
The Dr tells me these are just an intolerance and that is why they don’t show up on any tests. I don’t care what you call them my kids get sick from these foods.
About 18 months ago we started going to the Chiropractor all of us my son was 6 months, but now my daughter can eat ice cream at a birthday party (a special occasion) with out getting sick. Of course the Dr told me she is just out growing it. But when the Chiropractor went on vacation for two weeks this summer, I didn’t even think about it and let my daughter eat ice cream with grandma and guess what happened? You got it she was sick by bed time.
Okay my summary:
Try removing foods from the diet one food a week or so . Don’t re-introduce anything till you’re done removing foods or you get a positive reaction, like your son isn’t sick. Re-introduce to removed foods slowly with a week in between watching for any possible reactions. Your positive reaction could be from a combination of removed foods.
Consider a Chiropractor, Try it at least weekly ( we went 3xs a week) for a month if you think it is a waste don’t continue. ( don’t for get to ask about a discount if know you’re going to be there a lot). Just find a family Chiropractor in your area, especially if they believe in natural healing.
Could he have a foreign object stuck up there? I watched a show the other day about a kid who was getting constant lung infections and after a year they did exploratory surgery and found a tiny plastic SEQUIN stuck in her lung!! Worth mentioning to the doc.
